NEW DIOCESAN POLICY: Screening in Faith
We are living in an age where stories of physical and sexual abuse
are rampant even in the church. "The Diocese of Toronto is committed to ensuring that
our church is a holy place where the love of Christ can be modelled and learned. Our
Baptismal Covenant identifies that we seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our
neighbours as ourselves (Book of Alternative Services, p. 159). A fundamental obligation,
therefore, is to look after the welfare of all members of our community but especially
those who are vulnerable through age, infirmity or particular circumstances of dependency.
This is a sacred trust which must be responsibly and safely managed."
To achieve this, the Diocese is putting in place a new policy,
"Responsible Ministry: Screening In Faith". This policy will seek to establish
minimum standards for the screening of staff and volunteers. The policy anticipates three
levels of risk: Low, Medium and High.
LOW RISK: Ministry duties and responsibilities that do not permit a
person to be alone with a child or vulnerable adult, or do not permit access to financial
resources or confidential information. Such ministries do not require a significant level
of authority or trust. (Examples: Coffee Hour coordinator, flower arranger, usher, reader,
some committee members.
MEDIUM RISK: Ministry duties and responsibilities that permit few
chances for a person to be alone with a child or vulnerable adult, or permit access to
financial resources or confidential information. People in these ministries are in a
position of authority or trust. (Examples: Adult Bible Study leader, Advisory Board
member, chairpersons, Team Collection Counter)
HIGH RISK: Ministry duties and responsibilities that permit
opportunities for a person to be alone with a child or vulnerable adult, or permit access
to financial resources or confidential information. These ministries are positions of
authority or positions that allows a person to establish long-term relationships of trust.
All residential or off sites ministries with children or vulnerable adults are always
ranked high risk. (Examples: Camp Leader, Christian Education Coordinator, Church
musician, Sunday School teacher, youth leader)
The level of risk involved will determine the extent of the screening
process.
This policy will also apply to ordained persons. It is expected that
the policy will be in place later in the year and every parish is expected to be in full
compliance with it.
We at St. Stephens will be called upon to assess the levels of
risk involved in our various ministries. We will be looking for assistance in this regard.
The above was excerpted from the Draft Policy

THE WARDENS' REPORT
WARDENS FAREWELL - Foster
Five years as part of the corporation, 2 as deputy and 3 as warden and
it is now time to relinquish the position. No! I am not leaving the Church or walking away
from all duties, but just stepping aside to give others the opportunity to take over. It
is indeed a privilege to have served as warden. The experience gained is immeasurable. My
decision not to return is with mixed emotions, happiness and sadness.
Happiness:
I will be able to sit through an entire service every
Sunday.
I will be able to spend more time with my family.
I will have more Saturdays and evenings for myself.
Sadness:
I will not be involved in the decision-making.
I will not be responsible for the completion of tasks started during my
tenure.
I will not be one of the Wardens.
I am committed however, to assist as often as I am able, giving
generously of my time, talent and resources. As the Bible says "If you give you will
get, Your gift will return to you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down shaken
together to make room for more, and running over."
Thank you to each and everyone for your assistance during the past
years. I must however give special mention to my family, Fenton, Father Stephen and Norman
DaCosta who were most instrumental and supportive throughout the entire journey. I am
confident that as a congregation we will provide support to the incoming Warden(s).
CHURCH BUILDING & SURROUNDING AREAS
The new ramp has been put in place using pressure treated wood. While
different from original specification, the cost was significantly less, without having to
compromise on durability and useful life of the ramp. Modifications/repairs are still
required and these will be completed in the spring. The cost to date is $29,360, and we
expect to spend another $5,000 before the work is completed to our satisfaction. As we
make the church accessible to the physically challenged we need to provide accessible
washroom facilities. We have received a quote of $11,000. However, other tenders will be
invited for this project.
Two pews have been removed from the back of the church to accommodate
wheel chairs and also to provide space for a resource centre and an audio sound system.
We are currently resealing and painting the room under the front steps
of the church. On completion this will be used to store the chairs etc and the existing
storage area converted into a nursery during Sunday services.
The furnace is almost at the end of its journey. Plans are heating up
to replacing it in the near future. One suggestion being looked at presently is the
installation of an air conditioning system as well.
Given the age of the building work will continually be required. We
plead with the men to come forward to assist as much as possible. This will reduce the
need to contract out the work thus saving the church unnecessary expenses.
SOUND SYSTEM
It is loud & clear the struggles continued with the present aging
sound system. Exploratory work is underway looking at how best to either upgrade or
preferably installing a brand new system. A new system would mean a number of enhancements
such as the ability to record the service for the shut-ins, recorded music to
be used in time of need (such as the absence of an organist) and four stations to
accommodate the hearing impaired. Funding for this project received a major boost recently
from one of our members. It is anticipated that the message will filter among us and
accumulating the funds required would not be difficult.
CHURCH VESTMENTS
Vestments are an integral part of Christian worship. This past year
several members responded to the call and contributed towards the purchase of much needed
vestments to be worn by our clergy. Donors seized this opportunity to remember their loved
ones or just a way of expressing their personal thanksgiving. We are grateful for this
enhancement.
DAYCARE
Childrens Corner Day Nursery continues to operate in the Parish
Hall. Repairs this year have been cosmetic and band aid solutions only. We recognize that
more permanent leaseholds are required in order that the day care operates in a safe and
healthy environment. The License Agreement has be resigned for 2003 with a $200 monthly
increase and this will assist with the upgrades required.
It is time to replace the stoves and fridge in the kitchen. These
appliances are old and we are loosing energy. We recommend a joint purchase with the day
care as both parties are using the appliances. Alternatively, we are considering
purchasing new appliances for the rectory. The present appliances can then be used at the
Church. We leave the decision to the incoming Warden(s).
RECTORY
The rental agreement on the rectory expires May 31, 2003. While overall
we are pleased to report that the asset is in good condition, there are a series of
recommendations handed down by the building inspector. There are timelines attached to the
recommendations that must be honoured. We will be prepared to work with the incoming
warden(s) to ensure completion if assistance is required.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Hugh McEwen has provided some information and recommendations on this
very important area. While some have been followed through, work continues to be required
to ensure we are in compliance and the work place/Church is a safe and healthy environment
for all.
PERSONNEL
Unlike previous years, staff salaries will not change in 2003. This
does not mean that they did not merit an increase. In fact they continue to go above &
beyond. Fr. Stephen Fields (Rector), Connie Kendall (Youth Worker), Gina Carter
(Secretary), Arlene August (Organist) you are the foundation of our ministry at St.
Stephen. We thank you for the hard work and dedication.
Justin Nwanalobi (Volunteer Extraordinaire) has been doing a marvellous
job assisting with the upkeep and maintenance of the Churchs interior &
exterior. As well, we would like to acknowledge the spirit and dedication of Beatrice
Ngoku. Her assistance is immeasurable.
Also, there was a noticeable increase in members participation
(volunteering) in many areas of ministry in our Church. We would like to express sincere
thanks to each of you. It is our hope that many more are encouraged to come forward and
share in the Lords work.
CHURCH SEXTON
After much thought was placed on the importance of a Church Sexton, a
decision was made to provision for and make this opportunity available. The position was
advertised for about a month in the Churchs Bulletin. We received one applicant and
are pleased to announce that Justin Nwanalobi has been confirmed Church Sexton effective
February 1st, 2003.
FINANCES
Faith is not measured in numbers, but our numbers have been faithful to
us. Thanks to our congregation & some extent friends, total receipts reached
unprecedented levels in 2002. Your contributions were well accounted for and responsibly
managed. This resulted in a surplus of $4,532.47 in the General Operating account.
ATTENDANCE
Total attendance reached 9,023 in 2002. That was an increase over last
years tally of 8,398, and best since 1997 when we realized 9,418. This is obviously
a good news story, although we fell short of the 2002 call of 9,500. We
worshipped 51 Sundays in 2002 at an average of 177 per Sunday. It is worthy to point out
the substantial increase observed at the 9:00 a.m. service.
Chart: Attendance 2001/2002 comparison

FELLOWSHIP SUNDAY
Fellowship Sunday was observed this year on June 8th. The
highlight was of course the barbeque, which was very well attended and overwhelmingly
supported. Thank you to all who worked to make this a success for the second consecutive
year.
SPECIAL THANKS
The Fundraising Committee that ran a successful campaign in
2002.
The Womens Group for a very successful Walkathon. The
contribution to the Sickle Cell Association will assist in their work
The Mens Group for purchasing the lawnmower.
Our Congregation for giving cheerfully and willingly to the
work of the church.
THE WAY FORWARD
Project 2006 has been sidelined, for now! Fifty years and
counting
.where do we go from here? We have in some ways outgrown these
facilities. The need for room is ever so obvious. As our predecessors did back then, we
need to think of a long-term plan to provide for future generations. We see glowing
examples of congregations aggressively fundraising to upgrade or rebuild. We need a
similar blueprint. This, no doubt, will form the foundation for another 50 years. As
present stakeholders, our legacy needs to be written. Think about it!
FAMILY
We could not have completed our responsibilities as Wardens without the
support, understanding, love and encouragement from our families: Maraval & Sonja
(Odlum) and Sherlene, Fenton Jr. Matthew & Renee (Jagdeo). To all of you we say Thank
you.
CONCLUSION - FENTON
Three years in service to the Church was not what I had envisioned.
Nonetheless, I am rather grateful for the opportunity. I have thoroughly enjoyed making my
small contribution. The experiences gained will remain life long assets. I take pride in
the work we did and very confident that the value added will help facilitate a seamless
transition. There are many challenges ahead of us. We have accomplished much together, we
must persevere with God's help, to strengthen HIS church and reach out in ministry.
I could not have done my duties without the help & collaboration of
my partner Foster. Your commitment, dedication, work ethics in general have positively
impacted us in more ways than one. Me in particular. In your words, "the Friendship
& Bond will remain." Fr. Stephen, your counsel and spiritual leadership are never
lacking. I am proud to say that I have worked with the best. Indeed, I boast that my
friends & I worship every Sunday.
Together with Deputy Wardens, S. Kathy Legall & Hyacinth Edghill
(who performed their duties unselfishly and earn highest praise) we concluded 2002 in
service to the HONOR & GLORY of OUR LORD & SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST.
Your Wardens,
Foster Odlum Fenton Jagdeo

FUND RAISING COMMITTEE
With God's help and the support and commitment of members, the fund
raising budget of $15,000 was achieved. A heartfelt thank you to all who assisted. This
year, the Walkathon was reintroduced. We held our annual Revival Concert and Fall Banquet
and the result speaks of the success of these ventures.
The committee members were less stressed. We were able to enjoy
ourselves with family and friends as we received additional help this year. The Fall
Banquet was catered and Ericka Martin and The St. Stephens Womens Group took
on the responsibility of organizing the Walkathon. The saying, many hands make light work,
became a reality.
In 2003, the church will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and most
of the activities with be centred around this occasion. In light of this, the anniversary
committee will organize most of the events. Additionally, there are plans to have
functions organized by groups from the various nations represented in our church.
I step back as chair, but will be available to help the committee. I
encourage each and everyone to assist in some area to make the anniversary celebrations a
success.

ALTAR GUILDS REPORT
The Altar Guild is responsible for general preparations of the church
for all services. Cleaning of the altar area, linens, and vessels are done primarily on a
weekly basis but also before and after each service. During 2002, we welcomed Angela
Gonsalves, Rhona McColman, Jean Philip and Unie Williams as new members on the Altar
Guild. This is in addition to our long standing members, Irene Canfield, Ena Hordatt, Fran
Jeffries, Constance Kendall, Dophnia Lindsay, Norma Richardson and Betty Thompson. A time
of fellowship and training was held in the spring for all members of the Altar Guild. With
the new members on board, we were able to have five teams. Each team consists of two
persons working on a two-week rotation over the year.
After many years of dedicated service, Irene Canfield and Betty
Thompson have now retired from the Altar Guild. We thank them for their unwavering
commitment and the many other contributions they have made to the Altar Guild and to the
Church of St. Stephen over the years. We appreciate the commitment and dedication of all
those members who have given of their time to ensure the duties of the Altar Guild have
been carried out.
As our senior members leave the group, we would like to encourage new
members to support us in this very important task in the life of the church. If you are
interested in finding out more about the Altar Guild, please speak to any of the members.
God bless,
Connie Kendall

USHERS REPORT
During the year 2002, the Ushers welcomed you every Sunday to the
Church of St. Stephen. This group of dedicated members , twenty two (22) in total, gave
willingly of their service to God and the worshipping community. I am proud to be a member
of this group who assists without being asked to do so, when someone is absent.
The year 2003 will see a decrease of two members who have moved. I
welcome others to join this group. You will be surely blessed.
On behalf of the Ushers, I wish to express our thanks to all who have
enabled us to smile more. May Gods richest blessing continue to shower upon our
church.

CHOIR DIRECTORS REPORT
The year 2002 began with the choir reconvening on January 6th,
at the first service after Christmas. Church services were varied: Praise & Worship
and Morning Prayer were introduced to complement the regular Holy Eucharist. The adult
choir led all services except in August, while the youth choir made occasional
appearances. The new hymnal has been extensively used as old and new hymns or songs were
appreciated by both the choristers and the congregation. This has resulted in more harmony
singing, as well as an improvement in the morale, level of enthusiasm and performances of
the adult choir.
New music was selected and rehearsed for Baptismal services, Holy Week
and Easter Sunday, Revival, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day and Christmas. The adult choir
also sung anthems during the administration of communion. Two choristers, Dr. Albert
Adegbembo (Tenor), and Mr. Anthony Holder (Tenor), lead the responses for Morning Prayer
and the Exsultet at the Easter Vigil, respectively. Our annual revival climaxed with a
concert and our adult choir performed the theme song "My House Must Be Filled."
The Choir was ably led by soloists Beverley Brown and Harold Hutchinson.
A few members of the adult choir attended the annual Area Ministry Day,
where several sessions, including one for gospel music, were attended. The day concluded
with participants joining in one big concert. Some Choristers also formed part of the mass
choir for the annual Black History Service.
During the organists summer break, Mr Ashley Tidy, Ms. Denise
Jackson and Master Marc Fields played at the services held in August and September.
YOUTH INVOLVEMENT
The youth continued to rehearse intermittently with Lucy Fields. They
sang occasionally at services, during the Revival and led the music for the Christmas
pageant.
This year saw the emergence new soloists amongst the younger
choristers: Chaniece Ashmeade, Crystal Walker, Ethel Quarcoo, Ellen Asiedu and Luke Fields
joined Khaleesha Linton to take leading roles.
Master Marc Fields and Miss Sonja Odlum were the accompanists for the
youth service held in June and did a great job.
To end the year, the Choir Director and the youth choir provided most
of the music to accompany the short Christmas pageant that was performed by the Sunday
school children.
APPRECIATIONS
Special thanks to:
the members of the adult and youth choir for their commitment to
attending rehearsals and services, and for their enthusiasm in wanting to learn new music.
the soloists who performed throughout the year
Mrs. Lucy Fields for her dedication to the work with the youth choir
The parents/guardians of the youth choir members for ensuring that
the children attended rehearsals
Ms. Constance Kendall for her persistence, patience and hard work in
putting together the pageant
It is hoped that with the churchs 50th anniversary in
2003, choir members will be even more involved in helping to enhance the music in our
services and celebrations, and help to praise Him who has given us the many talents we
enjoy.

Christian Education Steering Committee
The Christian Education Committee, comprising Collette Clarke,
Jacqueline Daley, Barnabas Emenogu, Ena Hordatt, Constance Kendall, Candice Laidlow and
Sherlene Jagdeo, was initiated mid-way in 2002. As a steering and coordination group, the
focus is to ensure that all Christian Education activities are coordinated and that gaps
are identified and addressed appropriately. In 2002, the committee met twice during the
year to develop its mandate and to identify gaps. These were presented to the Advisory
Board in September and are as follows:
Mandate:
Ensure that Christ-centered, age-appropriate and relevant C-Ed
programs are available to all members of the church community
Coordinate, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of C-Ed programs
Ensure that teachers, facilitators and the congregation are trained
to support
Organize, lead and facilitate C-Ed programs
Ensure that the church community, seekers and local communities are
aware of C-Ed programs
Provide a model for Christ-like communion
Areas To be Addressed:
Insufficient Sunday school teachers and assistants
No nursery for children aged 0-3 years
Absence of targeted-group ministries/programs based on the
demographics and needs of the congregation e.g., there should be C-Ed targeted to singles
parents, married couples, seniors, etc.
Absence of shift-friendly programs for parishioners who work
different shifts
Inadequate programs for new believers/seekers
Inadequate attention/teaching on doctrinal issues
Accomplishments:
Developed mandate and identified gaps in Christian Education
Presented gaps to Advisory Board for support
Organized and participated in Sunday School teachers training
Developed and evaluated Sunday School teachers training, resulted in
unanimous satisfaction from participants
Successfully recruited new teachers
Plans for 2003:
Promote and encourage interest in bible studies
20-Minutes In the Bible Series beginning February 16th.
This will take place between the 2 services to encourage participation from both. It is
primarily intended to fulfill # 4,5 and 6 in "Areas To Be Addressed".
5 Week Lenten Study: Cross Bearers We will
examine the life stories of 5 characters implicated in the passion of Jesus.
Friday Nights at The Movies, to take place during Lent, encourage all
ages to engage and discuss movie themes in light of Jesus passion, resurrection and
the Christian life.
ALPHA bible studies beginning in September, primarily intended to
fulfil # 5 & 6 ("Areas To Be Addressed"), which were identified as
requiring ongoing attention.
We ask for your prayers and support, as we continue to work to promote
bible study and application as an essential part of the Christian life.

THE BIBLE STUDY GROUP
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, another year has gone by and God has
stayed steadfast with us, enabling us to maintain and fulfil our commitments.
Our focus for 2002 was "What does being a Christian entail? How do
we demonstrate the proof of our claims of our daily lives and to the community?"
We meet on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. (winter) and 6:30 p.m.
(summer) to study the Scriptures in order to apply it to our daily lives by focusing on
the images Christ has taught us love, caring, compassion and forgiveness, to name a
few. In effect, we can then successfully use these images as instruments in our outreach.
Our outreach ministries continue a monthly Hymn Sing at
Downsview Acres, meetings every Wednesday mornings with the Black Creek Seniors,
visitations of the shut-ins and sick in their homes, and reaching out to those in need.
As usual, we organize our carol singing at Christmas. This year, we
joined with the Black Creek Community Seniors and did our singing at seniors homes
and the Sheridan Mall.
I am happy to mention that 90 percent of our group are involved in the
Diocesan Project, "No Longer Strangers". We attended a three-day retreat at Elim
Lodge (Peterborough) in November. For the first time, we were able to celebrate the
Eucharist with members of all churches in the Diocese. As we stayed over into Sunday.
"It was spiritually spectacular and fulfilling".
I wish to thank all the faithful members for their support, devotion,
fellowship, prayers, and commitment. I look forward to a blessed and peaceful year.
God bless you all.

SUNDAY SCHOOLS REPORT
The 2002 Sunday School year was one of change and adjustments. In 2002,
Francis Aseidu, who was Sunday School Superintendent for many years, took a much-needed
break. Tracey Richards assumed the job as Superintendent and with the excellent efforts of
Maraval Odlum, Norma Hutchinson, Buon Adegbembo, Candice Laidlow, Ratchel Ravindran, and
the administrative expertise of Iris Linton, ensured that the children were versed in the
teachings of the Lord.
At the beginning of the 2002-2003 Sunday School year, the teachers
mentioned above, after 3 years, are also taking a much-needed break. Our Sunday School is
now being carried on by some wonderful volunteers who through their love of our young
people volunteer their time every Sunday to ensure that our children are continuing with
the Christian journey. Thank you to teachers, Nadeen Murray, Colette Clarke, Novlette
Graham, Barnabas Emenogu. A very big thank you to the assistants who are always on hand to
pitch in as teachers on short notice: Joan Singh, Janet Morrissey, Ruth Allder, Tamra
Palmer, Angela Whyte, Margaret Quarcoo, Iris Linton and Sherlene Jagdeo.
We are currently using a new curriculum, Spirits of the Season, which
is a multi-age curriculum. The curriculum offers suggestions for lesson and allows
teachers to expand and insert their own ideas.
The administration of Sunday School is now a shared responsibility
between Tracy Richards, Fanella Hodge and Ruth Allder. Responsibilities have also been
divided in Ministries and delegated as follows:
Ministry Areas
Music Lucy Fields/Arlene August
Fellowship (Church customs/traditions) Frances
Events (Pageants/Parties) Iris Linton, Ruth Allder, Tracey
Richards & Frances Asiedu
Curriculum Fanella Hodge
Supplies (ensure availability) Iris Linton
Administration & Finances Fanella Hodge
Enrichment & Support for Teachers Fr. Stephen
Once again, thanks to all for their hard work last year and to all our
new volunteers this year thank you. With hard work and prayers together we will make this
year a success.

ST. STEPHENS SAINTS (Youth Group)
The members of our youth group continue to meet on the first and third
Sunday of each month during the 10:30 a.m. service. This time is spent in discussion on
the scripture readings with relevance to their lives. There are about twenty youth group
members and an average of twelve persons who attend our Youth Talk. The age range of our
Youth and Young Adults who attend Youth Talk now spans from thirteen to twenty-five. This
year Jacqueline Daley was able to give much needed support to the young people. Her
presence enabled us to divide the group into juniors and seniors so we could better
minister to all those who attend. She was also instrumental in planning our trip to Snow
Valley, our school year end youth service that included a career fair. A mentor group was
also developed for our senior youth.
Over the year the members were involved in other activities within the
church and wider church community. Some of the youth offered support in various ministries
of the church including reading, ushering and assisting with the Sunday School. This year
our youth participated in two special youth services. These were an awards presentation
held at the end of the school year and a welcome back service after the summer holidays
and beginning of the school year. At our youth service in June, Quincy McPhie was the
recipient of the Rectors Award and Ashanti Ravindran was the winner of the Eric
Campbell Memorial Award. This year Zina Allder and Orphtee Quarcoo completed high school
and moved on to college. Some of the youth are presently preparing for confirmation and
the service will be held in November. We ask for the congregations support of these
young people as they prepare to make a personal commitment to Christ.
Over the summer Marc Fields, Khalesha Linton and Ashanti Ravindran
supported the counselors at Noahs Ark camp as Leaders In Training.
At the end of the year a Christmas party was held and the members of
the Youth Group and friends enjoyed a time of fun and fellowship. Some of our past and
present members who now attend College and University were also able to gather for a
social evening to reconnect and share information about their programs.
We are presently in our twelfth year of Youth Ministry at the Church of
St. Stephen. I ask Gods Blessings upon our members past and present and give thanks
for all those who have supported the youth group and made our activities possible. We wish
André Francis, Andrew Ravindran, Kevin Sealy, Nicole DaCosta, Orphtee Quarcoo, Pierre
McDowell, Quincy McPhie, Royden Benjamin, Tamra Palmer, Tanza Olyfeldt and Zina Allder
Gods guidance as they pursue their studies at college and university. We thank the
clergy and members of the congregation for your continued support and prayers. May this
year be one of Health, Strength, Unity, Peace and Prosperity for all.
Yours in faith,
Constance Kendall

ST. STEPHENS COMMUNITY MINISTRY
Downsview Youth Covenant
During the year 2002 the programs and services offered by the Downsview
Youth Covenant focused on the areas of Education, Recreation, Health, Community and Family
life. These programs were primarily for youth ages 10 to 16. However through our
networking, we were able to reach out to their families, neighborhood schools and other
agencies within our area. The following were our activities for the year.
The Homework Club: The Homework Club meets on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings and instruction is provided primarily in the areas of Math, English,
Science and French. During the past year we have had twenty-seven students and ten
volunteers participate in this program. This year, teachers and students from our
congregation and York University volunteered their time to help tutor the students.
Our service of thanksgiving was held in June. Our volunteers were
presented with tokens of appreciation for their commitment and dedication. The students
were each given a certificate and others, including our graduates were presented with
medals in special areas of conduct and studies. We also presented The Rectors Award
and Eric Campbell Memorial award to youth from our congregation.
Chalkfarm Elementary School: Our Networking at Chalkfarm
Elementary school continues. Once again there have been changes in the staffing. The
number of students attending the school has decreased so the position of Vice Principal
has been lost. The school continues to be vibrant and staff members are involved in
initiatives in the community. Volunteers from our congregation assisted in the following
school initiatives.
The Snack program is held every day and snacks are
provided for the entire school. Our Ministry has contributed financially to this program.
Volunteers from the church have participated by preparing snacks. Volunteers received
special awards this year for their participation.
I am presently the community representative and on the School
Council. As a member of the council I have helped in the planning of fundraising
events, heritage programs, assemblies and other school initiatives.
Pre-Teen Group: This group meets on Friday evenings from 6:00
to 8:00 p.m. for a time of fun and fellowship. All participants between the ages of ten
and twelve are invited to participate in this program. The activities include prayer,
discussion, outreach, games, movies, outings and trips.
Cooking and Nutrition Workshops: Cooking and nutrition sessions
are held on alternate Monday evenings. Volunteers from the church and community teach the
participants to prepare a variety of snacks and foods. The participants learn about food
preparation from different cultures. Focus is also placed on preparing healthy foods with
good nutritional value by using the Canada Food Guide, games and other educational
information.
Sewing: Sewing classes are held on alternate Mondays and
instruction is provided by members of our congregation. Participants have learnt the
basics in sewing by hand and using the sewing machine. A banner depicting the Nativity
Scene was also made.
Noahs Ark Summer Camp: The camp held jointly by the
Churches of St. Stephen and St. Davids provided a stimulating program for children
between the ages of five and twelve. The campers were supervised by myself as program
coordinator, the assistant director and five counselors between the ages of sixteen and
twenty. The activities were varied and included bible study, art, crafts, drama, dance,
indoor and outdoor games, swimming, nature walks, movies and fieldtrips. We had another
successful year with a total of forty-two kids participating in the camp this summer.
Financial support: Our Ministry is funded by the
Community Ministries board from donations received through Faithworks. We also received
funding from Human Resources Development Canada and the Bishops Council of the
Credit Valley for our camp. Other donations are also received from individuals. This year
we were faced which budget cuts but have been able to still run a successful program. New
areas of funding have to be sought for future programming.
Staffing and Volunteers: I am hired as a part-time Youth Worker
for this Ministry. My function is to plan, co-ordinate, implement and supervise the above
programs. Volunteers from the church and wider community have committed their time to
assist with various aspects of our ministry. We also have teachers and community workers
who advise and help us on issues relative to our programs.
Networking: The many tasks and activities of the Downsview
Youth Covenant have enabled us to network with agencies and other groups in our area. We
have received ongoing support for our programs. These agencies provide varied services and
we have been able to solicit their help and support for our programming where necessary.
Speakers Bureau: During the course of the year, outreach
ministries are given the opportunity to share their work and experiences with
congregations in the Diocese. As a member of the Speakers Bureau, I have been invited on
several occasions to share the work of the Downsview Youth Covenant with other
congregations.
As a New Year begins, we continue to seek ways in which to improve our
Ministry so we can better serve the youth of our community. We continue to seek
participants and volunteers for our program. Our objective for this year is to continue to
help the young people who attend our programs to develop to their full potential. We will
also be working on developing our Ministry Team that will give ideas and support for the
various aspects of this Ministry. We thank God for guiding us through the past year. We
thank all our donors, volunteers, other supporters and the members of the congregation of
St. Stephens for your commitment to our Ministry. Please remember us in prayer.

THE ST. STEPHENS WOMENS GROUP
Meetings are held following the 10:30 a.m. service on the first Sunday
of each month. The Womens Fellowship is open to all women of the congregation. Our
attendance has averaged 15 ladies per meeting.

Outreach
In September, the group sponsored a walkathon where we raised money for the church and for
the Sickle Cell Association. In December, we hosted our Seniors Christmas Luncheon
for approximately 70 seniors. About 30 were from our congregation and the remaining 40
were form the community.
Fellowship
In November, 8 women attended a retreat at beautiful Mount Alverno Retreat Centre,
Caledon, Ontario. The focus of the overnight retreat was on how we could overcome our
anxiety by casting our cares on the Lord. Jacqueline Daley was our facilitator for this
most successful retreat. Unfortunately due to a scheduling conflict with another retreat
some of our members were unable to attend.
Youth
The Eric Campbell Memorial Award was again supported for the third year. Students in the
congregation submitted an essay on "If I were a Priest at St. Stephens
Church." The winner of the Award was Ashanti Ravindran.
Support for our Parish
A most successful Fathers Day Luncheon was held in June when the ladies of the
congregation honored the men of our congregation with food and song. In November, we
hosted a special after service "Coffee Hour" when the Area Bishop visited and
officiated at Holy Baptism. We continue to host coffee hour on the third Sunday of the
month.
Our challenge
We continue to seek and encourage the women of the congregation to participate in the
Womens Fellowship. We feel that we are not attracting the younger women of the
congregation especially the young mothers and are seeking ways to make the group more
welcoming and interesting to them.
Our Plans
To host a womens prayer breakfast.
To do a workshop for young mothers.
To expand our retreat to a full weekend.
To encourage the women of the Fellowship group to take a more active
part in planning and leading of the devotional part of our meetings.
